Instructor Training

Whether you are looking for a change of career, new prospects or just a new challenge, becoming a driving instructor is a very interesting & rewarding career. You will have the freedom to choose your own working hours and no previous experience is required. MSM can provide you with all the training you need to become a Fully Qualified Driving Instructor. We currently offer instructor training courses within The Berkshire Area.

To qualify for the training You must....

  • Have Held a full driving licence for at least 4 years
  • Your licence should be free of endorsements, although certain allowances may be made. Anybody with serious criminal convictions cannot be accepted.
  • Be able to read a car number plate from a minimum distance of 90 feet.
  • You must complete a three part examination in the following order. You must complete the whole examination within two years of passing the Theory Test.


Part 1 - Theory: This is a computerised touch screen examination lasting 90 minutes consisting of 100 questions split into four bands:

  • Road Procedure
  • Traffic Signs & Signals, Car Control, Pedestrians, Mechanical Knowledge
  • Driving Test, Disabilities, Law
  • Publications, Instructional Techniques

After a break of up to three minutes the Hazard Perception part will start. This consists of 14 video clips each lasting about one minute, the test contains 15 scoreable hazards & the candidate can score up to 5 marks per hazard.

You need to pass both parts of the Theory Test to obtain an overall pass result. The overall pass mark for the Multiple Choice part of the test is 85%, however you must reach a minimum mark of 80% in each of the four bands. For the Hazard Perception test the pass mark is 57 out of a possible 75.



Part 2 - Driving Ability: The Practical Test of driving ability consists of tests of both eyesight and driving technique. At the start of the test you will be asked questions on Basic Vehicle Safety. The test lasts for about 60 minutes & you must pass both parts of the test. To pass the test you must drive to a High Standard of Competence, demonstrating the principles of Eco-Friendly Driving & a well planned positive, progressive drive, adhering to & attaining national speed limits when safe & where possible.



Part 3 - Instructional Ability: The test in is two parts, each of which will last about 30 minutes, you must pass both parts of the same test.

You will be asked to demonstrate your knowledge and ability by giving practical driving instruction to the examiner who will take the role of the pupil.



There will always be people who want & need to learn to drive, so equally there will always be a demand for professional driving instructors to teach them. Becoming a qualified Driving Instructor is not simply the start of a new job, but the skills of a new profession which can last the rest of your working life.
