What To Expect On Your Driving Test

What to expect on the day of your Driving Test...

The day has finally arrived. The sleepless nights and the feeling of butterflies in your stomach are nearly over! Here is an insight of what to expect on the day of your Driving Test along with the DSA / DSVA "Show Me, Tell Me" questions for car tests.

At the beginning of your Driving Test, the Driving Test Examiner will want to inspect your valid UK Provisional Driving Licence. If you fail to bring this with you on your test day, the Driving Test Examiner WILL terminate your Driving Test before it even starts.

Next is the eyesight test. You will be asked by the Driving Test Examiner to read a number plate at either 20 metres for vehicles with a new-style number plate or a distance of 20.5 meters with an old-style number plate. After this you will then go to your car (or your Driving Instructors car), you will then be asked 2 of the DSA / DVSA 'show me, tell me' questions (below).

If you are taking your Driving Test in a Driving School car, you should ensure that you become familiar with all of the controls as you may be asked to identify them at the start of your Driving Test. Your Driving Instructor will teach you this during your Driving Lessons .

The "Show Me, Tell Me" questions (listed below) are designed to check your knowledge of basic car safety and will include one 'show me' question, where you actually have to demonstrate how and what you would do to check / adjust something, and one 'tell me' question where you would simply have to explain how you would do something.

The driving part of your test will last around 40 minutes. Throughout the test your examiner will be looking for an overall safe standard of driving.

During your test the examiner will give you directions that you should follow. You will drive in various road and traffic conditions. You should drive in the way your instructor has trained you.

You will have to show how well you can reverse your vehicle. The examiner will ask you to do one of the following exercises: reversing around a corner, turning in the road, reverse parking - either into a parking bay, or parallel parking at the side of the road

Your Driving Test will include around 10 minutes of independent driving. It is designed to assess your ability to drive safely while making decisions on your own.

If you make mistake just carry on! If it is not a serious mistake it might not affect your result.

At the end of the test you will get a debreif from the examiner and hopefully hear the words "Congratulations, you have passed your driving test..."

If you have any questions about your Driving Test or need any advice on learning to drive, feel free to give us a call on 01189612055. One of our experienced Driving Instructors will be happy to help.

DSA / DVSA Show Me, Tell Me Questions 2017

Question 1. Open the bonnet, identify where you would check the engine coolant level and tell me how you would check the engine has the correct level.

Answer 1. Identify the coolant tank and check the min / max markings. If the coolant is below the min mark then more coolant will need to be added. To do this, unscrew the cap and pour in coolant until the max mark is reached. Remember: Never open cap when the engine has been running or if the engine is hot.

Question 2. Open the bonnet, identify where the brake fluid reservoir is and tell me how you would check that you have a safe level of hydraulic brake fluid.

Answer 2. Identify the brake fluid reservoir and check the fluid level against the min / max levels.

Question 3. Show me/explain how you would check that the power assisted steering is working before starting a journey.

Answer 3. If the steering becomes heavy the steering may be faulty. Before starting a journey two simple checks can be made. They are:

1) Gentle pressure on the steering wheel, maintained whilst the engine is started, should result in slight but noticeable movement as the system begins to operate.

2) Turning the steering wheel after just moving off will give an immediate indication that the power assisted steering is functioning correctly.

Question 4. Open the bonnet, identify where you would check the engine oil level and tell me how you would check that the engine has enough oil.

Answer 4. Identify the dipstick, pull it out, wipe it clean, put it back in then remove again and check the oil level against the min / max markings.

Question 5. Open the bonnet, identify where the windscreen washer reservoir is and tell me how you check the level?

Answer 5. Identify reservoir and check the level. You may need to lift off the cap and make a visual check of level if there are no external markings on reservoir.

Question 6. Show me how you would check that the horn is working (off road only).

Answer 6. Press the horn and listen (turn on ignition if necessary).

Question 7. Show me how you would check that the brake lights are working on this car. (You may need to switch the ignition on but don't start the engine).

Answer 7. Operate brake pedal, make use of reflections in windows, garage doors, etc, or ask someone to help. (You may need to switch ignition on, DO NOT start the engine).

Question 8. Tell me how you would check that the brakes are working before starting a journey.

Answer 8. As you move off check the brakes. They should not feel spongy and the car should not pull to one side.

Question 9. Tell me how you would check that the headlights and tail lights are working.

Answer 9. Turn on the lights (turn ignition if necessary), walk around car and check that the lights are on.

Question 10. Show me how you would check that the direction indicators are working correctly.

Answer 10. Activate the indicators or hazard warning lights and walk around the car to see if all the indicators are working correctly.

Question 11. Tell me where you would find the information for the recommended tyre pressures for the car and how the tyre pressures should be checked.

Answer 11. The information will be found using the car manufacturer's manual. Check the tyre pressures by using a reliable pressure gauge when the tyres are cold. Don't forget to check the spare wheel and remember to refit the valve caps.

Question 12. Show me how you would check the parking brake (hand brake) for excessive wear.

Answer 12. Apply the parking brake. When it is fully applied it should secure itself.

Question 13. Tell me how you make sure your head restraint is correctly adjusted so it provides the best protection in the event of a crash.

Answer 13. The head restraint should be adjusted so the rigid part of the head restraint is at least as high as the eye or top of the ears, and as close to the back of the head as is comfortable. Note: Some restraints might not be adjustable.

Question 14. Tell me how you would check the tyres to show that they have sufficient tread depth and that their general condition is safe for use on the road.

Answer 14. A safe tyre will have no cuts or bulges. The tread depth should be at least 1.6mm across the central three quarters of the breadth of the tyre and around the entire outer circumference. Don't forget to check the spare wheel.

Question 15. Show me how you would clean the windscreen using the windscreen washer and wipers.

Answer 15. Operate the control to wash and wipe windscreen (turn ignition on if necessary).

Question 16. Show me how you would set the demister controls to clear all the windows effectively, this should include both front and rear screens.

Answer 16. Set all the relevant controls including the fan speed, temperature, air direction / source and turn on the heated rear screen. Engine does not have to be started for this demonstration.

Question 17. Tell me how you would know if there was a problem with your anti lock braking system (ABS).

Answer 17. A warning light will illuminate on the dashboard if there is a fault with the anti lock braking system.

Question 18. Show me how you switch your headlight from dipped beam to main beam and explain how you would know the main beam is on whilst inside the car.

Answer 18. Operate switch (with ignition or engine on if necessary), check with main beam warning light

Question 19. Show me how you would switch on the rear fog light(s) and explain when you would use it/them. (No need to exit vehicle).

Answer 19. Operate the switch (turn on dipped headlights and ignition if necessary). Check warning light is on. Explain use.

Please note: All of the above DSA / DVSA 'show me, tell me' questions are correct as of the 1st July 2017
