4th Jun 2020 - COVID-19 Update: DVLA grants 7 month photocard licence extension.
The extension applies to drivers with a photocard driving licence due to expire between 1 Feb and 31 Aug 2020.
Drivers with a photocard driving licence due to expire between 1st of February and 31st of August 2020 will be granted a 7 month extension from the date of expiry the DVLA has announced today (4 June 2020). This will help drivers to make necessary journeys without having to obtain a new photograph to renew their licence.
Normally drivers are required to renew their photocard licence every 10 years, and bus and lorry drivers every 5 years. A new EU regulation has now been introduced which means photocards that expire between 1 February and 31 August 2020 will be automatically extended for a further 7 months from the date of expiry.
Drivers will be sent a reminder to renew before their 7 month extension ends.

All theory tests in England from the 4th to 7th of June have been rescheduled due to the Coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak.
The DVSA are preparing test centres for a safe return to testing for all candidates. Social distancing measures are being put in place.
29th May 2020 - COVID-19 Update: All theory tests on Monday the 1st of June rescheduled.
All theory tests on Monday the 1st of June have been rescheduled due to the Coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak.
Tests in Scotland and Wales will be rescheduled up to and including the 21st of June 2020, this is in line with government guidelines in the respective countries.
The DVSA are preparing test centres for a safe return to testing for all candidates. Social distancing measures are being put in place.
28th May 2020 - COVID-19 Update: Theory test centre locations for critical workers.
To help critical workers get an emergency theory test at a location that is more suitable to them, the DVSA will be opening an additional 25 theory test centres across the UK.
When applying for an emergency theory test online, candidates will be asked to select their 'preferred' test centre. Their theory test will then be booked at the nearest available centre if their preferred location is not available.
Critical workers will now be able to take a theory test at: Aberdeen, Birmingham, Bristol, Cambridge, Cardiff, Carlisle, Chelmsford, Colchester, Eastbourne, Edinburgh, Dudley, Glasgow, Guildford, Ilford, Leeds, Liverpool, Manchester, Mile End A, Newcastle, Northampton, Nottingham, Plymouth, Portsmouth, Slough, Southwark.
The new locations have been chosen based on critical worker test demand.
Theory tests for anyone who is not a key worker have been cancelled up to and including 30th of May 2020. The situation is under constant review, in line with government guidance.
6th May 2020 - COVID-19 Update: Theory tests cancelled up to and including the 30th of May 2020.
Due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak, all theory tests have been cancelled up to and including 30th of May 2020.
What the DVSA are doing:
The DVSA are emailing anyone with a test booked up to 30th of May 2020 to let them know it has been cancelled and that they will be automatically refunded. It can take up to 10 working days for the refund to show back in the account it was paid from.
An emergency theory testing service will still be available to those who have a critical need to take a test, such as NHS and front line workers.
30th Apr 2020 - COVID-19 Update: Temporary changes to the car and vocational driving test.
From tomorrow, 1st of May 2020, the DVSA are making a temporary change to car and vocational emergency driving tests, to help reduce the spread of Coronavirus (COVID-19).
What will change:
Examiners will end emergency tests early if a candidates commits:
• a serious or dangerous fault
• a total of 16 driver faults
This is to help reduce the amount of time the candidate and the examiner spend in the vehicle, when the candidate has failed their test.
In these circumstances, the examiner will instruct the candidate to drive back to the test centre instead of continuing for the full time, before they tell the candidate they have failed.
Motorcycle module 2 tests will not be affected by this change.
29th April 2020 - COVID-19 Update: Changes to the emergency theory and practical driving test application process.
From Friday 24th April, the DVSA launched a new service to help make it quicker and easier for key workers to apply for emergency theory tests and emergency practical tests.
Key workers will no longer need to email a request for an emergency test. Instead, key workers will need to submit an application on GOV.UK website.
Applicants will be asked to supply their ID at the start of the application, so the DVSA have all the information they need to confirm eligibility for an emergency test.
The DVSA will email those who meet the criteria with a new test date and time at their nearest available test centre. This will be based on the information provided when submitting an application.

The DVLA have announced there are currently significant delays in processing licence applications and returning ID documents. They have asked to bear with them and to avoid contacting them for updates.
20th Apr 2020 - COVID-19 Update: Theory tests cancelled until the 8th of May 2020.
Due to the Coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak, from Monday 20th of April 2020, all theory tests have been cancelled until Friday 8th of May 2020.

20th Mar 2020 - COVID-19 Update: Driving tests suspended for up to 3 months.
Driving tests suspended for up to 3 months. Driving tests for critical workers to continue and to be prioritised.
The DVSA are suspending driving tests for up to 3 months from Saturday 21st March 2020 as there is extended contact between candidates and examiners in vehicles. Motorcycle tests are also being suspended.
The DVSA have put in place plans to provide tests for people who provide essential services.
This includes:
• car driving tests
• motorcycle tests
• Approved Driving Instructor tests
• lorry, coach and bus driving tests
The DVSA will get in touch with everyone with a test booked during this time to let them know their test has been suspended and that they will automatically re-book them.
In addition all theory tests have been cancelled until Monday 20th of April 2020 and refunds will be issued.
